Who are The Balek Band ? With their new LP Médecines out in the next couple of weeks. Lets find out..

How would you present/describe your work to someone who doesn’t know you?

The Balek Band is the gathering of 4 musicians around a mix of organic, traditional and electronic instruments. We navigate through a wide range of genres and aesthetics : Disco-Balearic-Italo Disco-Pop- Electronic-post Funk-Caribbean… In a word we’re four friends with a shared taste for musical exploration. All that sealed by an 80’s sound color and an original craft, resulting from a lot of live and studio work.

The balek Band c’est la réunion de 4 musiciens autour d’un mélange d’instruments organique/ traditionnel et d’instruments électroniques.
On parcours un large univers esthétique Disco-Balearic-Italo Disco-Pop- Electronic-post Funk-Caribbean….

Bref, on est quatre amis avec un même goût pour l’exploration musicale, le tout cimenté par une couleur 80’s et une patte original, résultat de pas mal de travail en live et en studio.

And your last record? How was it born? And where do you want it to lead?

It’s actually our first long player. We were hesitating to dive into it, and album seemed a bit out of reach for now. Then COVID came, and we suddenly had a lot of time to focus on what matters. So we took and our instruments and headed to the countryside for a week, time to lay down the basics of the record, which stayed afterwards. We then finished the record in around a year.

Notre dernier disque est en faite notre premier long format. On a hésitez un peu avant de se lancer dedans, faire un album nous paraissait un peu inaccessible pour le moment. Puis le COVID est arrivé, le temps de se focus sur l’essentiel. On a donc pris notre instruments et nous sommes partis à la campagne pendant une semaine le temps pauser les bases de l’album, qui n’ont jamais bougé, et que nous avons fini en environ 1 an.

What message would you like to convey to the public?

The record is called “Médecines”. We put all our heart in it. It really fed us, in a creative, emotional and spiritual meaning. That’s why we named it so. It was a true cure for us and we hope it can be one for the listeners and the dancers.

L’album s’appelle “Médecines”. On a mit dedans tout notre coeur et notre sincérité. L’aventure nous a vraiment nourri, au sens créatif, émotionnel et spirituel du terme. Voila pourquoi on l’a appelé ainsi. Ca a été une vraie médecines pour nous, et on pense que ça peu aussi en être une pour l’auditeur/ danseur.

How do you make music? What is most important for you?

Our workflow is both super spontaneous and strict at the same time. What matters is to let creativity run into matter. We try to hold nothing back, try things out, then ideas become clearer and we start to get a glimpse the best way there is. Each track is conceived on it’s own but also part of a bigger picture, like the elements of a landscape. We get emotions from looking at the landscape as a whole, and when we take a closer look at one fo them it tells its own story.
On a une façon de faire à la fois très spontanée et rigoureuse. L’important est de laisser l’imagination se confronter à la réaliter de la matière. Il ne faut rien retenir, tester des choses, puis les idées s’éclaircissent et on aperçoit alors la voie qui sera la bonne. Chaque morceaux est pensé à part entière mais éxistant dans un ensemble. Comme les élements d’un paysage. Le paysage vu dans son ensemble nous procure une émotion, et quand on s’intéresse à chaque éléments distinct de celui ci, chacun nous raconte sa propre histoire.

Is there a unifying concept behind your art?

Our music is very spontaneous and human based. We go through such a wide range of music that it will always be evolving, along with the evolution of our human adventure among the band. That’s why I would say that time will give it’s true unifying concept to our project. Even if we have a well defined universe we’re open to everything.

The Balek Band c’est une musique très spontanée et très humaine. Le champs musical exploré est tellement large qu’il sera toujours en évolution. Et cette évolution sera évidemment celle de l’aventure humaine que nous vivons au sein de ce groupe.
Je dirais donc que c’est le temps qui donnera son réel “concept” au projet. Même si nous avons un univers bien marqué, nous ne nous refusons rien !

What makes you unique?

We’re like a smoothie machine. You put musical, sensitive ingredients in it and a juice comes out. Sometimes it’s sweet and fruity, sometimes it’s herbal and quite strong.

On est comme un gros blender. On y met des ingrédients musicaux, esthétique, sensitif et il en ressort un jus d’émotion, tantôt doux et sucré, tantôt herbacé et à fort caractère.

As for your studio, what is it currently composed of?

The same as our live se-up. A mixture of organic and electronic instruments. The electronic side is balanced between recent and vintage gear, the latter being accountable for a pretty typical 80’s sound color.

Au studio nous composons avec le set up que nous avons en live. Il est composé d’un mélange entre instruments organique et électronique. La partie électronique est équilibré entre bécanes récentes et plus vintage qui confère un son et une couleur assez typique 80’s.

What is the one instrument you would never get rid of, no matter what?

Hard to say there’s for of us. It’s all or nothing!

Difficile de répondre, nous sommes 4 musiciens. C’est tout ou rien !

Do you have hope for the future of music? How would you like the future of the music industry to be?

There are so many incredible things to listen to out there, so we obviously have hope for the future of music. The industry, though, tends to make a market out of a culture, and a stereotype out of a music genre, taking out it’s substance and it’s interest.

But rather than just blaming the industry, I would say it comes to each artist to take care and do things with the heart. The same way we have to change our ways to keep the planet, it’s our responsibility to find new ways to promote and live off music.

Il y a un nombre incroyable de choses magnifiques à écouter donc nous avons évidemment foi dans la musique !

Après l’industrie, les grands lobbys, eux, tendent à marketiser et stereotyper la musique au point de lui retiré son intérêt et sa substance.
Mais plutôt que de leur taper dessus, je dirais que c’est plus à chaque artistes de veiller à faire les choses avec le coeur et à donné du sens à leur création.
De la même manière que nous devons faire changer notre façon d’agir pour sauvegarder la planète, il est de notre responsabilité de trouver des nouvelles manières de promouvoir et de vivre de la musique.

Can you reveal some future projects to us?

The record just came out, we heading into the summer tour that goest with it. After that we have a few more residencies to work on the live act. In the meantime, we’re already thinking of our next record.

Notre album vient juste de sortir avec la tournée estival qui va avec. Après ça, nous avons encore quelques résidences pour le peaufiner le live.
En parallèle de ça nous sommes déjà entrain de réfléchir à notre prochain disque.

What makes you happy?

Spending time together playing music, laughing, eating and drinking. Surrounded with good vibes and nature.

Passer du temps ensemble à jouer de la musique, rigoler, manger et boire. Le tout entouré de bonnes énergie et de nature !

What bothers you?

To talk about bothering stuff.

Ce qui nous dérange c’est de parler de choses dérangeantes.
